Detailed 8-Day Kenya Birding Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Welcome to Nairobi, Kenya
Upon arrival at the airport, our company driver or guide will pick you up and drive you to your hotel in Nairobi for the night. Depending on your arrival time, you may choose to go for a short city tour around Nairobi.
Day 2: Nairobi to Samburu National Reserve
After breakfast, begin your safari with a drive to Samburu National Reserve, located along the Ewaso Nyiro River. You will travel through central Kenya and cross the Equator.
Arrive at Samburu in the afternoon for lunch, followed by an afternoon game drive in the park. Dinner and overnight stay at your lodge or camp.
Day 3: Game Drives in Samburu National Reserve
Spend the day on game drives in Samburu, with one in the morning and another in the afternoon. The park is home to rare northern species such as Grevy’s zebra, Somali ostrich, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, and Beisa oryx.
You may also see elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, baboons, gazelles, waterbucks, warthogs, hippos, hyenas, and more. Return for a relaxing evening. Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 4: Samburu to Mt. Kenya
After breakfast, leave Samburu and drive to the slopes of Mt. Kenya, the highest mountain in Kenya and second highest in Africa. Arrive in time for lunch and a short rest. Later, go on an evening game drive in Mt. Kenya National Park. Look out for elephants, leopards, rhinos, buffaloes, bushbucks, waterbucks, elands, tree hyrax, and duikers. Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Optional activity: Nature walk and bird watching (extra cost).
Day 5: Mt. Kenya to Lake Nakuru National Park
After breakfast, drive to Lake Nakuru National Park. Arrive in time for lunch, then head out for a game drive. Lake Nakuru is known for its birdlife, with over 400 bird species, and also offers good sightings of other animals. After the game drive, return to your lodge or camp. Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 6: Lake Nakuru to Masai Mara National Reserve
After an early breakfast, drive to the famous Masai Mara, home to the annual wildebeest migration from July to October. Arrive for lunch at your lodge. Later, go for an afternoon game drive to look for elephants, buffaloes, antelopes, hippos, and crocodiles along the Mara River. Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 7: Full Day in Masai Mara
Start with an early morning game drive to look for predators and other wildlife. Return to the lodge for breakfast, then continue with a full-day game drive.
You may see the Big Five and many other animals including wildebeests, zebras, giraffes, cheetahs, lions, leopards, buffalos, hartebeests, hyenas, and over 500 bird species. After a long day in the park, return for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 8: Return to Nairobi
On your last day, go for an early morning game drive to look for any animals you may have missed. After the drive, return for breakfast, then check out and begin your journey back to Nairobi. You will be dropped at your hotel, residence, or at the airport for your flight home.
