History of the Masai Mara National Reserve

The Masai Mara Game reserve is one of the most visited places in the region. It was a wildlife sanctuary in the 1960s during the colonial times. The area has over the years collected more land from the community to expand and provide a wider area to conserve the wildlife here. The conservancies here have done a very big job in improving the wildlife population growth in the area.

The Game reserve has over the years been a very important part of the corridor that joins the Masai Mara, Serengeti and Ngorongoro conservation areas to support the movement of wildlife between these areas.

The Narok country was given the responsibility to run and manage this wildlife reserve together with the Trans Mara which has the mandate of running the wildlife in western and eastern parts of Kenya.

The reserve is now largely held as one of the leading wildlife conservation areas in the world, known for the famous wildebeest migration.

  1. African lion: In the 1960s, the population of lions in the Masai Mara had declined a lot fur to the floods the happened then. It is said that about very few female lions and a few males survived this ordeal. By the end of 1965, there were other 15 males that had come to the Masai Mara. This boosted the efforts to improve the population of these animals. By the year 1975, there were over 100 lions that live only inside the Masai Mara National Reserve. There about 60 lions in the crater today. The decrease in number is due to the steep slopes of the crater that deter the lions come here and boost reproduction. Lions are also killed by the locals that graze their animals here. There have been several conflicts between the two.
  2. African buffalo: They are usually in groups and will form a great defense again predators. The males and females will all have horns. The buffalos are really heavy animals and if attacked by a lion then it’s at risk of losing its life. Buffalo can be aggressive, and frequently come into conflict with humans outside of protected areas.
  3. African elephant: The numbers of elephants in the Masai Mara National Reserve are probably the largest will ever come along on any safari. They are very giant animals with ivory tusks that they flaunt around. The elephants were killed a lot before the pre ivory ban of the 1980 and since then the population has grown a lot. This area is one of the best places where you can view these African giants. Baby elephants are about 80 centimeters tall at birth but they grow into very large adults. Elephants use their trunks to pick up objects, bathing and drinking. They use the trumpet sound to warn others. Due to their size, they intimidate the predators and they only trouble the young elephants. Elephants can use their trunks to dig and find water in periods of drought. An adult elephant will drink about 90 to 140 liters of water a day.
  4. Rhinoceros: There are two species the black rhinoceros and the white rhinoceros. The Masai Mara National Reserve has the black Rhinos. These black rhinos are an endangered species. They have been killed a lot for their tusks to near extinction. The Masai Mara National Reserve is among the few places in Tanzania where you will be able to view these Black Rhinos. By the year 1965 there were about 100 black rhinos in the Masai Mara National Reserve alone. By the time we go to the 1980s after poaching had been criminalized in Tanzania, the number of these rhinos increased a little. The rhinos are now monitored by the authorities every minute of the day.  By the year 2004, the number of these rhinos had grown to 17. Black Rhinos are highly endangered and have been poached to near extinction. The Masai Mara National Reserve is one of the last places in Tanzania where you can still reliably see wild black rhinos. They are very hard to miss here.
  5. Leopard: This area is also good for those searching for the big five. There is a large population of leopards in the Masai Mara. Leopard are carnivores and they feed mostly on fish, antelopes, warthogs, monkeys, rodents, zebras, wildebeests and many other animals. Night Hunts: They are usually shy animals and most of their hunting is during the night. Most of their night preys are owls, porcupines, bats and hyenas. Experiencing vacation holidays in the dry season is amazing. The dry season is what we commonly refer to as the high and peak seasons.

The dry season months are January, February, June, July, September, August and September.

This is the best season for wildlife viewing as animals over roam the park in search for water sources; unlike in the wet season when they can easily access water from whatever they might be.

However, the only downside with the high and peak seasons is the surge in trips.

So may tourists visit the park that you hardly get a sense of privacy on your game drives. Most facilities and services also get sold out in advance; making it hard to book any last minute trips.

If you plan to travel in the high season, endeavor to book your trip several months in advance so that you get the best facilities and services.

Experiencing Masai Mara tour packages in the wet season

Experiencing vacation tours in the wet season can be bad and enjoyable at the same time. It all depends on preference. The wet season is what we commonly refer to as the low season in the tourism industry.

The wet season months are March, April, May, October and November. These months are usually rainy and because of this, so many tourists do not prefer to visit at such a time.

To contradict this, traveling in the low season will not only save you a lot of money, but is equally enjoyable too.
