Discover Musiara Sector – Maasai Mara Wildlife Delight

The Masai Mara National Park is situated in the southwest of Kenya, close to the country’s rift valley. The unending plain in this park is well-known for housing a variety of wildlife. They include wildebeests who migrate here during the dry season. This is in an attempt to avoid the protracted droughts in the Serengeti National Park.

The park’s name pays tribute to the indigenous Masai people who lived in the reserve before it was gazetted as a conservation area. The Masai are nomads who lead a unique way of life. It’s remarkable to observe how dependent people are on their livestock for existence. The Masai term “Mara” refers to the acacia plants that are scattered across the plains of this national reserve.

The Masai Mara National reserve was gazzetted in the year 1961 as a wildlife sanctuary. It is bordered by the Serengeti National park in the Northern region of Tanzania. The Mara reserve is famous for the wildebeest Migration. This occurs here every July to October as animals walk hundreds of miles from the Serengeti Tanzania to the Masai Mara in Kenya.

The Oloololo escarpment is located in the western border of the national park. This plateau is so unique and will stun you with outstanding nature. The rest of the park is covers in rocky hills, woodlands, savanna grasslands and riverine forest vegetation.

The Masai Mara national reserve has two main river basins: the Talek River and Mara River. The two rivers separate the Masai Mara National reserve into three sectors: the Sekenani Sector, The Musiara Sector and the Mara Triangle. The Narok County manages the Musiara and Sekenani sectors while the Trans Mara County manages the Mara Triangle.

Musiara Sector of Maasai Mara

This sector of the National Park is undoubtedly the best for game viewing in the Masai Mara game reserve. The Musiara Sector, which is generally sandwiched between Talek and Mara rivers. The sector is further in the south eastern part of the Masai Mara National reserve. The fact that it is near the Mara River makes it a very good spot for the river crossing season of the great migration. The Musiara sector of the Masai Mara makes up biggest section of the reserve.

There are large herds of animals here especially in the months of July to October as they migrate from the Serengeti to the Masai Mara. There are a lot of cats that you can see in action of catching their prey on a lucky day.

Within the Central Plains, the savanna of Paradise Plain is prime cheetah territory. While Rhino Ridge is ideal for black-backed jackals, spotted hyenas, and bat-eared foxes.

The Lookout hill is a very good spot to watch the hippos in the Olpunyaia Swamp. For scenes of wildebeest crossing the river during the months of the migration.
