Situated further in the southwest of Kenya is the Masai Mara Game Reserve. The region is renowned for its generally vast, uninhabited wildness, which covers plains of over 1510 square kilometers. Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park borders the Masai Mara Game Reserve. The many years of excellent conservation efforts in the Masai Mara have resulted in incredibly distinctive species. As the greatest place in Kenya to view leopards, the area provides the best encounters with big cats. Lions, cheetahs, elephants, rhinos, African buffalo, wildebeest, giraffes, and zebras are a some of the area’s unusual wildlife inhabitants.

This National game reserve is evidently the most visited conservation area in Kenya. This is no wonder that is also on the list of the wonders of the world. One of the attractions that make this place marvel is the wildebeest migration that generally happens every year in the dry season when animals from the Serengeti move to the Masai Mara to look for greener pastures. The Masai tribe here is equally another marvel. This group of people is very unique in their ways of life. They are nomads and they used to live in the park before it was declared a protected area. Their transition from this kind of life is another thing you out to look out for.

Basically the park gets its name from the locals of the area. The work Mara mean ‘spotted’ which generally refers to the flat topped acacia trees, shrubs and bushes that dot the landscape across the reserve. The great migration of the wildebeest here usually happens between July and September and over a million of wildebeests and other animals like Zebras and some cats move to the Masai Mara from the Serengeti National park. It’s interesting how they cross and make it t this area through all the huddle like the waters infested with crocodiles and the many predators.

There are several activities that you can enjoy while in the Masai Mara game reserve like the game drives, nature walks cultural experiences, horseback riding, hot air balloon safari and bush meals. A flight from Nairobi to the Masai Mara will occasionally last about an hour but you can also access this game reserve by road which is about a 3 hours drive.
